Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southwestern Uganda, home to roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorilla population. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is widely regarded as one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences available anywhere on Earth.
Treks begin at dawn from one of the park's four sectors — Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, or Nkuringo — each offering access to different habituated gorilla families. The trek through the dense, ancient forest can last anywhere from one to eight hours depending on where the gorillas have moved. Once found, you spend one precious hour in their presence.
The experience of sitting quietly in the forest watching a silverback gorilla interact with his family — juveniles tumbling and playing, mothers nursing infants, the great silverback moving with quiet authority — is humbling beyond description. It is a moment that changes the way you see the world.
